■（社）大阪珠算協会と大阪商工会議所の共催事業である「外国人のための珠算講座」は、1986年6月に開講し丸23年が経過した。協会の先生方の献身的なボランティア指導で年々人気は上昇している。21年度からは大阪府教育委員会の後援事業として認可を受け、新しい第1歩を踏み出した。
■7月4日時点で、受講生は世界中の82カ国から940人が参加し受講した。常時35名前後の受講生が在籍し、毎週土曜日の10時から12時までの2時間の講座を受講している。日本語が理解できる人は日本語で、英語しか使えない人には英語での指導を行っている。指導に当たる協会の先生方は珠算の指導経験が長く、高段位の取得者も多い。
■原則ワンツーワンで指導するので、殆どが高学歴の受講者であるから、その進歩は目を見張るものがある。1週間に1度の練習であるが、適度の宿題が出されるので、塾での指導システムと比べても、遜色はない。毎回の授業半ばでセットするブレークタイムでは、たくさんの国から来ている受講生の交歓が行われる。また、終了後のランチタイムも異国間文化交流の貴重な場になっている。
■6月28日に第186回珠算能力検定試験（1・2・3級）が日本商工会議所主催で全国一斉に行われた。外国人講座では、ブラジル人のHumbert Baba（フンベルト・ババさん）33歳男性が1級にチャレンジした。日系二世で、母親（日本人）からブラジルでそろばんの手ほどきを受けた。 2007.2.10に外国人講座に入門。2年4ヶ月が経過している。
■フンベルトサンの成績は、見取算90／×算95／÷算55で合計240点で1級に合格した。23年間で、1級合格者は二人目である。1人目は台湾からの関西大学大学院研究者陳さんで、20年も前のことである。講座から受験して1級合格を果たして後、アメリカの大学院に入学、博士号をとって帰国。台湾で貿易商を後継している。
■フンベルトさんは、サンパウロ大学で電子工学を学び、2004．5に来日、ソフトウエアエンジニアとして活躍中。映画鑑賞、トレッキングが趣味で近作“おくりびと”に深い感銘を受けた。近畿エリアでは奈良がお気に入りで、緑と静けさ、伝統の味わいが魅力的という。
■同じくブラジル人のMarina Oikawa（マリアナ・オイカワさん）24歳の女性。日系四世で、2007．4に文部科学省の国費留学生として来日した。現在は奈良先端科学技術大学院大学のマスターコース2年生。専攻はコンピュータサイエンスであるが、フィールドは、“計算機視覚と拡張現実感”である。
■マリナさんは3級に初挑戦。結果は、見取算80／×75／÷100で合計255点、見事に合格であった。趣味はそろばん、ギター演奏で、大好きな曲は、“The Scientist”（Coldplay)である。ブラジルのFederal University of Para（パラ大学）卒業である。
■講座には、関西の大学院研究者が多く在籍中であるが、近代科学を追及する彼らが何故日本のそろばん技術の習得にエネルギーを費やすのか、現代社会の不思議の一つである。知的レベルの高い彼らが納得し追求したくなる、something special（何か不思議なもの）がそろばんには内包されているのかもしれない。彼らの手を通じて、世界にそろばんが広がりつつあるのは事実である。

"The abacus course for the foreigner" that is the co-sponsoring by the Osaka Abacus Abacus and Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry starts a course in June, 1986 and 23 whole years have passed. Popularity rises every year by devoted volunteer guidance of teachers of the society. Authorization was obtained as a backup business of the Osaka Prefecture board of education in 21 fiscal year, and the first new step was stepped forward.
At the time of, July 4 the participant participated by 940 people from 82 countries of all over the world and attended a lecture. The participant after 35 names is always on the register, and the course has been attended for two hours from 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock on Saturday every week. The person who understands Japanese is guiding it to the person who can use only English in English in Japanese. Teachers of the society that undertakes guidance also are long the guidance experience of calculation on the abacus, and have a lot of acquirers of a high rank.
There is something that the advancement is amazed because most is a student of a high academic background because it guides it by the principle one to one. There is no inferiority compared with the tutoring system in the cram school because moderate homework is given though it is a practice once a week. Exchanging courtesies of the participant who has come from a lot of countries is done at the break time set in usual class middle. Moreover, the lunch time after it ends is a valuable place of the cultural exchange between foreign countries.
The 186th calculation on the abacus ability certificate examination (the 1･2･3th grades) was done simultaneously throughout the country on June 28 by sponsoring The Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Japan Consumers Association. In the foreigner course, brazilian's Humbert Baba 33-years old man challenged the first class. The initiation of the abacus was received from mother (Japanese) by the second generation Japanese-American in Brazil. It is an introduction in the foreigner course. 2007.2.10 Two years and four months pass.
The result of Humbert Baba passed the first grade by 240 points in total by sums 90/multiplication 95/division 55. Those who pass the first grade every 23 years are the second person. The first person is Mr.Chin of the researcher of the Kansai University graduate school from Taiwan, and as many as 20 years are the previous states. He entered the graduate school in the United States after passing the first grade, took a doctorate, and returned home. He successedin Taiwan as for the trading merchant.
Brazilian's 24-year-old of Marina Oikawa woman similarly. She came to Japan to 2007.4 as a foreign student at government expense of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology by four Japanese generations. They are the second master's course graders of Nara Institute of Science and Technology now. The field is "Computer sight and augmented reality. " though the major is a computer science.
Mis Marina is an initial try in the third class. The results were 255 points in total, and passing to splendor with sums 80/multiplication 75/division 100. The hobby is abacus, ax work, and the loved tune is “The Scientist" (Coldplay). She graduated from Federal University of Para of Brazil.
It is one of the mysteries of the contemporary society why men who pursue the modern science spend energy on the acquisition of the abacus technology of Japan though the researcher of the graduate school in Kansai is on the register a lot in the course. Something special (something mysterious the one) that wants to consent by them that an intellectual level is high, to pursue, and to become it might be involved to the abacus. It is true that the abacus is extending to the world through their hands.
